How to make one blazer work five ways

A single well-cut jacket should carry you from a Monday meeting to a Friday dinner without renegotiating your wardrobe.

Buy the jacket you can wear five ways, not the five jackets you wear once each. That is the whole argument, and it holds up against almost every wardrobe audit we run.

The candidate: mid-weight, single-breasted, shoulder that sits flat, length that covers the seat. Colour in the navy, chocolate, charcoal or oxblood family.

Versatility is not a compromise. It is the point.

The five

One — over tailored trousers in a related tone for work. Two — with straight-leg denim and a loafer for weekends. Three — over a slip dress with a heeled boot for dinner. Four — with a fine knit and a silk scarf for travel. Five — shoulders only, over a column dress, when the room is warm and the evening is long.

What to alter

Sleeve length first: the cuff should end at your wrist bone with a centimetre of shirt showing. Then the waist, if the jacket allows it. Both together usually cost less than a pair of shoes and will change how every outfit reads.
